Personal protective equipment (PPE) is an essential aspect of healthcare that no professional can overlook. When working in high-risk environments, PPE is the armor that keeps healthcare workers and patients safe from infections and injuries.

Understanding what equipment to use and how to use it properly can make all the difference in maintaining safety and delivering quality care. This guide will explore the most important PPE that healthcare professionals should prioritize.

Gloves

Gloves are a fundamental part of PPE in all areas of healthcare. They protect healthcare workers from exposure to harmful pathogens and bodily fluids. However, not all gloves are of the same quality. Knowing when to use latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves allows professionals to approach each situation with the right tools.

Disposable latex gloves are useful during routine procedures that do not involve exposure to harsh chemicals. These gloves provide excellent dexterity and sensitivity, making them suitable for taking blood samples or administering injections. Nitrile gloves, on the other hand, are durable and resistant to chemicals, making them ideal for labs or procedures that involve hazardous substances. Vinyl gloves are useful for short-term tasks with low risks. Healthcare professionals should keep in mind that they are less expensive but less durable than latex or nitrile.

Care providers should know the right way to put on and remove gloves in order to prevent contamination. In addition, they should discard gloves right after use and never reuse disposable gloves, as doing so negates their protective purpose.

Masks

Masks are perhaps one of the most important PPE for healthcare professionals. They protect against inhaling airborne particles, droplets, and aerosols that can carry infectious agents.

N95 respirators offer advanced filtration capabilities. These masks fit snugly around the nose and mouth, filtering out at least 95 percent of airborne particles. They are useful for medical procedures that generate aerosols, such as intubation or treating respiratory illnesses.

Surgical masks are widely used during general procedures. While they do not provide the tight seal of an N95 mask, they are effective at blocking large particles and droplets, reducing the risk of cross-contamination. For added protection, care providers may wear face shields in conjunction with masks, offering an extra barrier against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids.

Gowns

Protective gowns are indispensable when there is a high risk of exposure to infectious materials, such as during surgeries or treating patients with contagious diseases. These gowns act as a protective layer for clothing and skin, blocking fluids that may spread infections.

There are different levels of gowns depending on the level of risk. For low-risk activities, disposable gowns may suffice. Medium- and high-risk situations, however, call for fluid-resistant or impermeable gowns for optimal protection.

Properly donning and doffing gowns are critical for their effectiveness. When putting on a gown, secure the ties at the neck and waist for full coverage. When removing it, roll the gown inside out and avoid contact with the outside surface. Always dispose of disposable gowns immediately after use or send away reusable gowns for cleaning.
