Yerba Mate Tea: How Adding It to Your Diet Can Benefit your Health

Updated on September 22, 2020

Sometimes, the simplest addition to your nutrition can go a long way. It is the case with drinking yerba mate tea. This popular drink from South America comes with a long list of health benefits that goes from an energy booster to helping you stay in shape. Here is a look at the reasons why you should think of adding Yerba Mate Tea to your diet.

Increases Energy, Focus and Exercise Efficiency

The beneficial effect of caffeine on the body as a stimulant (when taken in regular doses) has been proven many times, in different studies. It acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system, the heart and muscles. Mate tea Taragui contains caffeine, in a smaller dose than in a cup of coffee, but more than in other types of tea. This is probably why mate tea drinkers find that they get the benefits from drinking coffee without the jittery effect it usually comes with.

In a sport study, 12 women were either given two-grams of yerba mate or a placebo before they trained. The ones who received the dietary supplement felt a gain in focus and energy, compared to their normal routine, without yerba mate. In addition to this finding, researchers found that these women also burned more fat during their workout, which led them to conclude that the intake of yerba mate, before training, improves fatty acid oxidation during the workout.

Helps the Condition of the Heart

A study in Brazil, where yerba mate tea is very popular, showed that 99 postmenopausal women who consumed it on a regular basis (an average of one liter per day), were showing fewer cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and coronary diseases. They also showed lower serum levels of glucose.

Reduces Inflammation

Antioxidants are crucial to our body. They help reduce inflammation, protect us against many diseases, all the while keeping us looking younger. Yerba mate tea is full of antioxidants, thanks to the Vitamin C, caffeoyl derivatives and polyphenols it contains. They fight free radicals that promote oxidative stress which causes cell damage. It is better to get these antioxidants through food and beverages than as dietary supplement as they are much more efficient in that form.

Drinking yerba mate tea will help you maintain a healthy skin, prevent lines and wrinkles, and help you look younger. But it will also keep you healthier inside, preventing you from infections and diseases, which can help you live longer.
