White House to Hold Livestream Event on Hunger and Nutrition

Updated on September 24, 2022

Conemaugh Health System and 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health (1889 JCPH) are happy to share information on the upcoming livestream event for the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.  The event will take place on Wednesday, September 28. The Biden-Harris Administration is holding this conference for the first time in over 50 years.

“Tragically the impact of diet-related diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease is very evident in our community. The White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health will provide a renewed strategic vision to strengthen ongoing efforts to improve the health of our community. I look forward to collaborating with other community stakeholders who also share this vision,” said Barbara J. Duryea, Clinical Support Manager, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

By encouraging community organizations and individuals to watch the livestream event, Conemaugh Health System and 1889 JCPH are creating conversations locally about food insecurity and nutrition with community stakeholders.

The Administration has a goal of reducing hunger and diet-related disease by increasing healthy eating and physical activity in the United States by 2030.  To do this the Administration has outlined the following 5 Conference Pillars;

  • Improve food access and affordability
  • Integrate nutrition and health
  • Empower all consumers to make and have access to healthy choices,
  • Support physical activity for all,
  • Enhance nutrition and food security research

There are many food security initiatives already underway throughout the region, including the new addition of a Food Systems Coordinator position, the Eat Right Pharmacy initiative at the Conemaugh Diabetes Institute, implementation of the Local Foods, Local Places initiative action plan, recent launch of SNAP benefits at the Farmer’s Market and many more.

“We are grateful to the Biden Administration for highlighting food security needs in our communities through the Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health.  The 1889 JCPH, along with our community partners, will continue over the coming months to move the many food security initiatives already underway forward, as well as look at opportunities to continue to meet the food security needs of our most vulnerable residents,” said Jeannine McMillan, Executive Director of 1889 JCPH.

Using the livestream event as a catalyst for discussion, the Local Foods Local Places (LFLP) group will host a summit to bring stakeholders together to review local food initiatives. The summit will take place Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Conemaugh East Hills.

About 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health

The 1889 Jefferson Center for Population Health was founded as a collaborative research and resource center focused on population health and disease prevention to benefit the citizens living in Cambria and Somerset Counties. The Center’s work focuses on identifying key contributing factors to poor health in the region and developing proactive and responsive strategies to address them.  The Center is the first of its kind established in a small rural community rather than a large metropolitan area. It is envisioned that the work of the Center will provide a national model of how population health interventions can work in rural communities.
