5 of the Most Common Emergency Dental Procedures

Dental emergencies can be caused by injury or disease. Visit a dental office such as Dentistry by Design if you find yourself in such a situation.

1. Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is an infection that affects a tooth’s root. More often than not, there will be a pocket of pus in and around the area.

Left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of your body—including your brain. Rarely, it can also lead to sepsis, a life-threatening illness that kills more than 250,000 individuals a year.

2. Chipped or Broken Teeth

Several things can cause your teeth to break. For instance, part of it might chip if you get hit in the mouth while playing sports.

As you can imagine, it’s much easier for bacteria to enter the body if you have a broken tooth. For this reason, you want to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Depending on the break, a root canal or crown may be necessary.

3. Knocked-Out Tooth

Some injuries are forceful enough to knock out a tooth. In cases like that, you’ll want to act quickly. The sooner you get to a dentist, the better the chance that they’ll be able to put it back in place.

Ideally, you want to put the tooth back into its normal position during transport to the dentist. If that’s not possible, place it in a cup of cold milk.

4. Toothache

Sudden toothaches are not uncommon. Depending on the severity, it may qualify as a dental emergency. Visit your dentist right away if you’re experiencing severe pain—they’ll be able to determine the underlying cause.

In the meantime, apply a cold compress to the area. Consider taking an over-the-counter medication for the pain.

5. Lost Crown

Losing a crown can cause significant pain. That isn’t too surprising, after all—the tooth tissue will be exposed.

The first thing that you want to do is to locate the crown. Why? You want to bring it with you to the dentist—they should be able to put it back in place for you. Don’t worry if you’ve swallowed it; it will usually pass with no problems.
