When local politicians throw youth, education, elderly, and human services out as their reasons for raising taxes, why don’t they open up discussions about the tough items—including health systems, universities, pensions, casinos, and contracts with certain vendors—that cost the county millions each year.
I don’t care whether you are a Republican or Democrat, or whether you are a follower of Norvel Norquist or Ebenezer Scrooge. Stop thinking that raising taxes solves anything. Instead, start making tough decisions and begin to challenge some of these scared cows.
