St. Clair Health Announces Retirement of President and CEO James M. Collins

St. Clair Health today announced that James M. Collins intends to retire as President and Chief Executive Officer on June 30, 2022.  Michael J. Flanagan, currently Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, will succeed him beginning July 1st.

Collins has served as President and CEO of St. Clair Health since 2006. Under his leadership, St. Clair grew substantially and became nationally recognized for excellence.

Starting in 2012, St. Clair was named as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® six times, the most in western Pennsylvania, including in each of the last four consecutive years.

Last month, St. Clair received its 20th consecutive ‘A’ patient safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, marking 10 straight years, a figure unequalled in the state of Pennsylvania and matched only by 33 hospitals in the country.

In 2016, St. Clair completed a clinical affiliation with the renowned Mayo Clinic to expand its clinical services and bring additional expertise to the region, becoming one of only 45 members of the Mayo Clinic Care Network worldwide.

During Collins’ tenure, St. Clair added numerous medical and surgical services, increasing its inpatient and outpatient volumes by 20% and 142%, respectively.  St. Clair’s market share in its service area grew by 33% since 2006.

St. Clair also expanded its regional footprint with outpatient centers in Bethel Park and Peters Township, and in 2021, completed a $162M master site plan on its main campus, highlighted by the 300,000 square foot Dunlap Family Outpatient Center.

“It’s been a privilege to have led St. Clair during this period of growth and its emergence as a national leader in patient safety, quality, satisfaction and value,” said Collins.  “I am delighted the St. Clair Health Board selected Mike Flanagan to succeed me as CEO. Mike has been a partner in advancing St. Clair’s mission, and he is an exceptionally talented leader who embodies St. Clair’s values.”

“St. Clair Health’s Board of Directors thank Jim for an outstanding job leading the organization over the past 16 years. He propelled St. Clair to unprecedented heights while never losing focus on the community, patients, and caregivers,” said Thomas M. Medwig, chair of the St. Clair Health Board of Directors. “Mike has worked closely with Jim and the Board for many years, successfully establishing his qualifications to assume the role of President and CEO.”

Flanagan joined St. Clair Hospital in December 2006, becoming Chief Operating Officer in August 2007. He has 30 years of health care industry experience and previously served in roles at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Policy and Administration from the Pennsylvania State University and a master’s degree in Public Management, with a concentration in Health Systems, from Carnegie Mellon University.
