To provide safer and more efficient cardiac care to Mercer County area residents, Sharon Regional Medical Center today announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab.

Heart disease is one of our nation’s most common health problems and the leading cause of death for Americans age 35 and older. American Heart Month is celebrated every February and is an opportunity to increase education and raise awareness of heart disease prevention.   Equally important is the introduction of advancements in the medical technology used to diagnose and treat this condition.  Sharon Regional’s new lab is part of a $3.5 million expansion project that included the renovation of the existing Diagnostic Imaging suite and the installation of the new Phillips Healthcare Allura Imaging System.

The new system is designed for catheter-based procedures to treat a wide range of clinical problems including coronary artery disease – a leading cause of heart disorders in the U.S. The system’s workflow innovations paired with its low-dose imaging capabilities help clinicians treat patients efficiently and provide advanced care.

“Both our patients and clinicians can benefit from the speed, low-dose levels, and outstanding image quality of this new X-ray system,” explained Dr. Brandon Mikolich, cardiologist and medical director of the cardiology department at Sharon Regional. “It allows our physicians to complete a variety of diagnostic and interventional procedures faster, and that means the patient is off the table and on their way to recovery and discharge much sooner.”

The benefits of increasing efficiencies offered with the new lab often results in shorter hospital stays, reduced recovery time and greater patient satisfaction. These procedures can be performed on both the heart and peripheral blood vessels and optimizes workflow, enabling clinicians to swiftly and confidently perform both routine and complex procedures.

“Being an accredited chest pain center means that Sharon Regional Medical Center is recognized for our team’s commitment to higher standards for heart attack care for those in Mercer County and the surrounding communities, explained Dr. Mikolich, “Investing in new technologies only continues to advance and expand our team’s ability to diagnose and treat a range of patient conditions through diagnostic catheterizations, stenting, and more complex interventions here in our local community.”
