Pittsburgh Business Group on Health Hires New CEO to Lead Next Stage of Growth

The Pittsburgh Business Group on Health, a leading non-profit business coalition for employers seeking to protect healthcare for their employees, today announces the selection of Mike Stancil as President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Stancil’s role will commence immediately, according to Mark Weber, chair, CEO Selection Committee, PBGH Board of Directors.

Mr. Stancil brings more than 15 years of management experience, including strategic development and plan execution, including at PBGH where he has served since 2019 as Director of Marketing, Chief of Staff and most recently as Chief Operating Officer since 2020.

“Mike is the right leader for PBGH,” said Tammy Fennessy, chair, PBGH board of directors. “His established experience in business and in the healthcare marketspace is impressive and his ability to coalesce strategy and forward-thinking initiatives among employers, service providers, health plans and others will be important to augment the growth PBGH is focused on over the coming years.”

Mr. Stancil will lead a team aimed at helping employers protect and enhance their ability to provide access to high-quality, equitable and affordable healthcare for their employees from across the region. According to Mr. Weber, the PBGH board of directors embarked on a months-long national search for the organization’s new CEO and President – entertaining more than 75 candidates in the process. Mr. Stancil becomes only the third person in the organization’s 40-plus year history to take the helm.

Jessica Brooks, who served as CEO & President since 2013, announced her resignation in August and will continue in a leadership role until December 31, 2022, to help provide a smooth transition opportunity for Mr. Stancil among the organization’s employer-members and associate and allied members, as well as among other stakeholders, including civic and community leaders.

“For nearly a decade, Jessica built a world-class organization, which is respected across the county and powered by a dedicated team focused on putting people at the forefront of every decision,” said Stancil. “I look forward to continuing that legacy and building upon it as we embark on a new era for PBGH and for healthcare, generally, as it continues to evolve and shape the way care is delivered and received in our communities.”

Over the past several years, Mr. Stancil helped to lead PBGH’s health equity efforts, including a two-year public series focused on maternal and infant health across the region, the formalization of the Bridges 4 Health Equity initiative, and during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, helped structure the comprehensive distribution of PPE supplies to employers, as well as an ongoing, “Back-to-Work,” strategy for organizations.

“The future of healthcare in Western Pennsylvania is in the collaboration of employers, health systems, our established and prominent community organizations, and our local government leadership. We saw our collective impact as we joined forces to fight the pandemic. As the dust is just beginning to settle around us, we have a singular opportunity to stay at the table and ensure quality, affordable and equitable healthcare for our region,” said Stancil. “The Pittsburgh Business Group on Health will be there at that table to work with anyone who is willing.”

According to Stancil, PBGH has already achieved impressive results with its commitment to health equity and strategic data deployment, as well as group purchasing, which alone has saved employers more than $100 million over the past five years in prescription drug cost savings.

Mr. Stancil received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Slippery Rock University and a master’s degree in digital publishing from The George Washington University. He is currently a Salk Health Activist Fellow through the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, an Executive Service Corp member at the Bayer Center for Non-profit Management and a member of the Pittsburgh Business Times Leadership Trust.
