Healthy Habits to Work into Daily Routines Starting Now

Updated on February 9, 2020

Are you healthy? Most of us answer that question in the affirmative. Whether we’re all correct or not, it’s important to know some of the most common things that truly healthy people do to maintain their positive attitudes, strong bodies and powerful immune systems. The next time you speak with someone you consider a wonderful specimen of glowing health, ask them if they do the following things. Don’t be shocked if they check off many on this list.

Annual Medical Checkups

We always hear about the advantages of detecting diseases early in their life cycles. If you rarely visit a doctor’s office, you automatically lose out on this key part of maintaining optimal health. When you get a checkup at least once per year, doctors can compare important parameters like blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and others. If there are unexplained changes, that could be a signal that something is wrong and needs to be checked out.

Smart Pain Management

Health-conscious adults know that pain is usually an important warning sign. When your doctor prescribes you something like medical cannabis to control physical discomfort of any kind, it’s important to take the medication as prescribed for the correct amount of time. Obtaining your medical marijuana card is now a simple task because you can fill out the required forms online. Pain management means doing what you need to deal with your body’s discomfort, talking to a doctor about the possible reasons for the pain, and carefully following the directions on any prescriptions.

No Tobacco

How long have the warnings been on cigarette packs? It’s been more than a half-century now, and some still ignore the blatant surgeon general’s words about how bad tobacco is for the human body, at any age and in any form. People in top shape don’t smoke, rarely chew tobacco and avoid drinking alcohol to excess. But the no tobacco rule is probably the most widely known admonition for helping humans stay in good shape and live long, enjoyable lives.

Balanced Eating

Watch what in-shape people eat when they’re at restaurants or dining at home. You’ll likely realize that they eat most of the same things you do but consume smaller portions and enjoy a wider variety of foods at each meal. When they take advantage of portion control, don’t consume lots of added sugars, include vegetables and protein with most meals and sit down for three meals per day without snacking in between, they are engaging in balanced eating. Maybe there’s something to the old adage about three squares a day and no snacking.

Regular, Healthful Sleep

Another habit that seems to bring out the best in the human body is sleep. Adults who get between 7 and 9 hours of continuous sleep each evening enjoy all sorts of benefits. Not only do they seem to be peppy and energetic during the day, they also tend to have fewer mood swings, digestive problems and colds. Of all the traits that seem to contribute to general wellbeing, adequate sleep is usually at the top of the list.
