Health Science and Nursing Departments at La Roche College Seek Participants for Get Healthy at La Roche Program

Updated on October 6, 2016

Funded by a $10,000 grant from The Passavant Hospital Foundation, La Roche College will initiate a free program called Get Healthy at La Roche this January.

“The goal of Get Healthy at La Roche is to assist participants in losing weight, educate them about the necessary measures to achieve a healthy lifestyle, and provide a comfortable and supportive environment,” Lauren Ameris, DC, chair of the Health Science Department at La Roche, said. “La Roche students who are enrolled in a health assessment course this spring will be involved in this program by evaluating the participants’ progress journals.”

Participants will be evaluated by measuring monthly vital signs, weekly weigh-ins, progress journals and exercise logs. These individuals will have access to a website with scheduled events, including: group walks, yoga classes, Pilates classes, nutrition workshops and fitness app workshops. The Kerr Fitness & Sports Center also will have set times for program participants to use the facility.

To be eligible for the program, participants must have a pre-existing health condition and be one of the following:

  • An employee or patient of Passavant Hospital
  • A student or staff member of La Roche College
  • A resident of Northern Allegheny County or Southern Butler County

Up to 50 participants will be accepted into the program. The top three participants who lose the greatest percentage of weight will win prizes.

The deadline to register is Nov. 4. An orientation for the program is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1, and the program runs from Jan. 9 to April 27, 2017.
