Expansion of Mental Health Facility among Upgrades at Beckley VA Medical Center Campus

AE Works to lead design efforts that target expansion of the Medical Center’s outpatient mental health support facility

Pittsburgh-headquartered architectural and engineering firm, AE Works was recently awarded a contract to provide design and engineering services to expand existing mental health support operations on the Beckley VA Medical Center campus.

Located in the heart of southern West Virginia, the Beckley VA Medical Center, a general medical and surgical facility with long-term care services, provides vital healthcare services to more than 38,000 Veterans living throughout an 11-county area.    Critical to supporting delivery of outpatient mental healthcare services, this new addition will expand the existing facility with 15,000-SF slated for much needed office and administrative spaces.  With services currently partially housed in temporary space, the new building will provide this important program with permanent facilities and a seamless space solution to support the delivery of counseling and outreach services.

“At the core, healthcare and architecture are both about people.  Architecture can dramatically impact the experience of the space and delivery of healthcare services.   Every detail is opportunity – an opportunity for an extra touch, a small change that will encourage more collaboration, improve flow, or enhance the sense of the space,” expresses Michael Cherock, PE, President of AE Works.

One of these opportunities rests on integrating the new addition with the existing building and surrounding campus.  Situated in the midst of three national parks, the picturesque Beckley mountainous terrain carries into the medical center campus, presenting some unique design challenges on the constrained site.

“Infrastructure, flow, and connection to the existing landscape are all important elements of design.    The distinctive backdrop of Beckley’s topography is an opportunity to enhance the identity of the campus and existing facility,” affirms Michael Cherock, PE, President of AE Works.
