Diane Hupp Named Chair of Duquesne University Board of Directors

Diane Hupp, president of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, has been unanimously selected as the chair of the Duquesne University Board of Directors at their October 11, 2024 Board meeting. She succeeds John “Jack” McGinley, who served has served as board chair since 2017.

In addition, Charles A. Kennedy, chief investment officer at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), will replace Hupp as vice chair of the Duquesne University Board of Directors.

Hupp is a nationally respected health care leader who brings decades of experience in health care management, education and community engagement to her role as board chair, further strengthening Duquesne’s commitment to its mission and service. As chair, she will work closely with University administration to advance Duquesne’s commitment to innovation, service and the holistic development of students.

“I am deeply honored to step into this role at Duquesne University, a place that has played a foundational role in both my personal and professional life,” said Hupp. “I look forward to working with the Board and President Gormley to support the University’s mission of providing transformative education and fostering community impact.”

She earned both her bachelor’s in nursing in 1987 and her MSN in nursing administration in 1995 from Duquesne University and has been a long-standing advocate for children’s health and innovative medical care. As president of one of the nation’s top-ranked pediatric hospitals, Hupp has led initiatives that transformed patient care, expanded medical services and enhanced the hospital’s global reputation for excellence.

As chair of the Board of Directors at Duquesne, Hupp will help guide the strategic vision of the University as it continues to expand its academic programs and community impact.

Outgoing Chair Jack McGinley has long been dedicated to Duquesne’s advancement, making immeasurable contributions to the University and its students. 

Kennedy, who has led CMU’s investment program since 2010, brings a wealth of financial acumen and strategic insight to the board of directors. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1988 from Duquesne’s Palumbo Donahue School of Business and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1995.

“Chuck’s appointment as vice chair of the board comes at an auspicious time for our institution,” Gormley said. “His expertise will be instrumental in assisting Duquesne continue to strengthen its financial sustainability as we pursue new initiatives, make key investments in academic programs and research, and enhance our long-term institutional growth.”
