Conemaugh Physician Group Welcomes Critical Care/Pulmonary Physician

Conemaugh Physician Group welcomes Muhammad Imtiaz, MD to its Critical Care and Pulmonology practices. Dr. Imtiaz is board-certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, and pulmonary medicine. He will see inpatients at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, and outpatients at Conemaugh Physician Group – Pulmonary, 1111 Franklin Street, Johnstown.

Dr. Imtiaz earned his medical degree at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, followed by an internal medicine residency at New York Medical College, Montefiore Medical Center. He completed two fellowships – Pulmonary Medicine fellowship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine; and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Imtiaz was most recently an Assistant Professor of Medicine of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York.



Dr. Imtiaz will utilize this critical care training to help patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “Patients in the ICU have serious injuries and illnesses, and we are able to provide medical intervention for those patients and see the results rather quickly,” he said. “Often one or two days can be a complete difference in the lives of those patients. We have to make timely decisions and we can see quick results.” Dr. Imtiaz enjoys the procedures and providing overall care to patients in the ICU, but mostly helping patients and their families. “When the patient gets better it’s a great feeling, and the family truly appreciates what the medical team has done to help.” He is highly trained and skilled in the point of care ultrasonography/echocardiography and incorporates modern technology into practice for patient care and medical education.

Dr. Imtiaz will also see patients at Conemaugh Physician Group – Pulmonary where he will treat patients with COPD, asthma, interstitial lung disease, and other diseases of the lungs. He has a special interest in treating lung cancer and pleural disorders. He is skilled in a wide variety of modern pulmonary and critical care procedures, such as pleurx catheter placement, permanent pleural catheter placement for malignant pleural effusion for symptom relief, EBUS (minimally invasive procedure for lung cancer stages) Bronchoscopy, intubations, hemodialysis catheter placement and several others. He will also provide consult services for pulmonary inpatients at Conemaugh Memorial.

Dr. Imtiaz is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, and Society of Critical Care Medicine.
