AHN Welcomes New Medical Oncologists, Colon and Rectal Surgeon

Medical oncologists Rachel Rosenblum, MD, and Alexander Helfand, MD, and colon and rectal surgeon Taryn E. Hassinger, MD, MS joined Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and are seeing patients at AHN Cancer Institute – Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and at AHN West Penn Hospital.

Dr. Rosenblum received her undergraduate degree from McGill University and her MD degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she was Chief Quality Fellow. 

She specializes in treating adult patients with thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymoma. Dr. Rosenblum is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. In addition to leading various quality improvement initiatives, she has published numerous articles and given presentations in her key areas of research, which include cancer care delivery and the integration of palliative care with oncology care.

Dr. Helfand received bachelor’s degrees from the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University, and a diploma in premedical studies from Harvard University. He earned his M.D. degree at Tel Aviv University and completed his residency in internal medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine: New York Presbyterian – Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and his fellowship in hematology/oncology at AHN. 

He has authored and co-authored numerous journal publications and conference presentations in his specialty areas of kidney cancer, prostate cancer, and bladder cancer. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a member of the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Hassinger received her undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and her M.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where she also earned a master of science degree in clinical research.  She completed a general surgery residency and a surgical oncology research fellowship at the University of Virginia and a Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. 

She is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a candidate member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Hassinger has published dozens of peer reviewed articles and delivered numerous conference presentations on a wide variety of topics.
