The 1889 Foundation is proud to highlight the impact of its Safe Spaces Initiative, a collaborative effort supporting more than 1,000 youth and young adults (ages 5–25) each week across Cambria and Somerset Counties. Through partnerships with eight local organizations, the initiative delivers safe, inclusive spaces that promote personal growth, healthy lifestyles, and community connection.
Just recently, the 1889 Foundation committed $350,000 to expand services and sustain these critical programs.
Addressing rising challenges like mental health concerns, bullying, substance use, and youth violence, Safe Spaces provides trauma-informed support in secure, welcoming environments. All program staff and volunteers receive training in abuse prevention, boundaries, and safe practices through the Greater Johnstown YMCA.
“These are more than just afterschool programs or community events,” said Susan Mann, President of the 1889 Foundation. Spaces are lifelines, places where young people find connection, mentorship, and the confidence to grow into healthy, resilient adults.”
Each of the following organizations plays a unique role in delivering meaningful impact through the Safe Spaces Initiative:
Ticket Wish Program – Provides access to over 40 cultural and sporting events at 1st Summit Arena and the North Central Recreation Center for underserved youth and families.
