When To Encourage Your Patients To See A Chiropractor

Updated on May 2, 2022

Good chiropractors can help their patients in a variety of different ways; it’s not just about back pain (and, of course, this is something that chiropractors can deal with very well). As a healthcare professional, it’s important for you to understand when it’s best to encourage your patients to see a chiropractor – it might be the best way they can heal and recover from their ailments. With that in mind, here are some of the more unusual or little-known reasons why someone might need a chiropractor’s care. Knowing this information means you can help your patients much more.

Headache Relief

Although pain medication – either over the counter or prescribed – can go a long way to reducing headaches, it could be there is an underlying issue that going to a chiropractor will solve. Of course, as a medical professional you’ll want to carry out a variety of checks to ensure there is nothing wrong that you can deal with, but if all those checks are clear, chiropractors could be the next step for two main reasons.

The first reason is that headaches can often be triggered by stress. Tension forms in the neck and shoulders when you’re stressed, and this can compress the skull, causing a headache. The more stressed you are, the worse and more frequent the headaches will be. Chiropractors can reduce the pain or even entirely eliminate it by manipulating the spine to reduce pressure elsewhere. Secondly, headaches can be caused by spinal misalignment which leads to pressure in the neck, and that, as we’ve said, is a big cause of headaches. Again, chiropractors will work on the spine to realign it, and reduce that pressure, thus reducing the headaches too.

Pregnancy

When you have a pregnant patient, they probably won’t have considered how chiropractors can help them feel better, which is why it’s down to you to inform them and, if appropriate, encourage them to make an appointment with a good chiropractor.

When pregnant, a lot of pressure is put on the spine, causing a great deal of discomfort and potentially mobility issues. The less mobile a woman is during pregnancy, the more chance there is of her developing gestational diabetes or even blood blots, which are dangerous for the mother and the baby. Chiropractors can reduce the pressure on the spine through specialist manipulation, making the woman more comfortable and more active.

Digestion

Digestion can be a big problem for a lot of people. If the digestive system isn’t working well, that can lead to blockages, or the body not producing enough acid to digest the food entirely, for example. If this is the case, you’ll feel sluggish and uncomfortable, and you might even stop eating because of it, which is clearly not a good idea.

When chiropractors realign the spine and the patient is able to stand up straighter, the stomach and intestines will be less restricted, meaning that food moves more easily along them. Plus, your central nervous system will be re-booted, and more stomach acid will be produced to aid digestion. The patient will soon feel much better and less uncomfortable.
