Things Every Woman Should Know About Her Libido

Updated on October 28, 2020

Female sexuality can be puzzling. You are in the mood today, and tomorrow the urge disappears, it’s natural. All women will go through times when they have a strong desire for sex and when they don’t feel like it. This guide helps you to understand what can rev up your sexual desire or put out the fire.

1. Exercise Boosts Your Libido

The health benefits of working out are well known. It prevents weight gain, increases muscle strength, and boosts bone mass. But you may not realise that regular time at the gym may also amplify your sexual urge.

During exercise, your body releases endorphins also called ‘feel-good’ hormones. These hormones boost your sex drive. As you work out, you improve the circulation of blood and body fluids to all parts of your body as well as your sexual organs.

While almost any type of exercise will have a positive effect on your sexual life, one can be done comfortably at home without much physical exertion.

Start doing Kegel exercises. These exercises are useful for mothers-to-be and mothers with newborns, but they are beneficial for all women. They strengthen the muscles in your pelvis and increase the sensitivity of your vagina, giving you more intense orgasms.

2. Take Pills with Caution

Some medication will extinguish your libido, but others can make it surge. Some years ago, women with weak sexual urges all of a sudden became very excited when the FDA endorsed Addyi – a sex drug made for women. It boosts desire by changing the balance of serotonin and dopamine in the brain.

However, in women who have not reached menopause, the daily pill produced side effects like drowsiness and nausea, leading to a weak libido. Similarly, if you are taking medication for high blood pressure or depression, you may experience a low sex drive if taking Addyi.

Birth control pills taken by women until they are over 40 can also produce a weak libido. These birth control pills reduce testosterone, which plays a role in raising your sex drive.

While it may not be wise to empty your medicine cabinet simply because of your libido, you can still use an effective female libido enhancer after consulting your obstetrician/gynecologist.

3. Avoid Stress by All Means

When you are passing through stress, your body increases its secretion of cortisol. An increase in cortisol causes a weak response to sexual stimulation. Mental or emotional stress distracts your brain, which is just as important as your sexual organs when sex is concerned. These distractions won’t allow you to focus and enjoy sex.

Additionally, stress creates tension in your relationship with your partner. Studies have shown that couples passing through stress relate poorly. Apart from triggering anger and disdain, stress also reduces your ability to sleep well at night.

4. Nutrition Can Make You Feel Sexy

Certain foods can serve as natural aphrodisiacs. An aphrodisiac arouses sexual instincts, increases desire, or boosts sexual pleasure. Here are some food choices to help you have a good time in bed with your partner.

* Maca: This sweet root vegetable is a favorite for boosting fertility in South America. A study showed that it elevated the loss of libido caused by the use of antidepressants.

* Ginkgo biloba: It’s a famous herbal supplement used to boost blood flow and metabolism. In traditional Chinese medicine it is used to treat depression and sexual function. Ginkgo biloba works as an aphrodisiac by relaxing blood vessels and improving the circulation of blood.

* Red ginseng: Ginseng is a well-known herb in Chinese traditional medicine, a study showed that red ginseng boosts sexual drive during menopause.

* Dark chocolate: A study revealed that eating chocolate enhances the release of serotonin and phenylethylamine into your bloodstream. These two hormones can boost your mood and rev up your sexual desire.

While some women tolerate these and other supplements quite well, you still have to consult your doctor before taking them. Most natural aphrodisiacs tend to thin out the blood to improve circulation. That’s why you must get medical advice if you are taking blood-thinning medications.

5. Protect Your Relationship

Frequent arguments, unnecessary criticisms, and fault-finding will not improve your desire for sex. In fact, for women, emotional closeness is essential for sexual intimacy.

Resolving conflicts and keeping good communication with your spouse is essential for building trust. Trust will naturally endear you to your partner and make intimacy more desirable.

Maintaining a healthy sexual drive is not a difficult task. If you work out regularly, avoid stress, eat the right foods and maintain a positive relationship with your partner, you should be fine. However, if you still find it difficult to enjoy sex after doing all these, consult your doctor.
