The Use of Surgical Units in Surgical Procedures

Updated on January 8, 2021

There is a rising number of surgeries every year. Thanks to the advancement of technology, surgical units are being developed to help with crucial surgical procedures. Nowadays, most surgeons prefer using HD cameras that aid in superior imaging and high-quality recording.

Medical cameras are vital tools that enable clinicians to directly view inside the body and effectively view the vessels and tissues instantly. Medical cameras can see what our regular eyes cannot. There are two types of medical cameras such as endoscopes and fiberscope cameras. The videos and images assist clinicians in the proper diagnosis and treatment to achieve successful results.

How Do Medical Cameras Work?

Medical cameras placed in the body should always be clinically proven for safety requirements; this is per the regulatory requirements. Uninterrupted delivery of clinical images is ensured through the camera hardware. Here is how the components of the cameras work:

  • Light Detection

Medical cameras are incorporated with a light source. The light source can be placed on top of the endoscope. It can also be an external source that is transmitted to the body through a cable. The amount of light must be bright enough to view images even in the darkest part of the body’s internal organ.

The target area is illuminated and generates a reflected image. In most cases, a fiber-optic cable is placed for easier display on the monitor.  If not, an image sensor (CCD or CMOS) chip can capture images just like a digital camera. The image transmission is enabled through cable transmission or wireless with the help of a radio transmitter.

  • Video from Surgery

The operation room monitors display streaming videos real-time display of the delicate procedures being recorded in the internal body. The video gallery allows for real-time heart imaging, laparoscopic view, knee imagery, and much more.

Benefits of Medical Vision Cameras

Some of the benefits of using medical cameras include:

  • High visualization of images.
  • Medical vision cameras allow for easy accessibility of wet areas within the body.
  • They allow for more detailed documentation and monitoring.
  • They help increase the accuracy of the results.
  • Allows for wireless transmission to enable coverage on the monitor.
  • Reveals the invisible parts of the body, such as tissue properties, chemical, or temperature components.

Future of Medical Vision Cameras

The need for medical cameras is soon expected to rise; this is because a wide range of medical field applications requires the use of vision cameras.  Several life applications that benefit from machine vision cameras include microscopy, endoscopy, pathology, and ophthalmology.

The surgical camera system is set to rise as the market need increases. The reasons for the rise in endoscopy section is due to the following factors:

  • Increase in the GI and respiratory procedures that include: cystoscopy, laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, laparoscopy and other essential procedures
  • A high demand in invasive surgeries
  • Increase in diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and arthritis.

These rising demands have triggered the production of cost-effective camera technology to meet the increasing needs. Disposable endoscopes with superior visualization will continue to improve the clinical imagery; this will enhance proper diagnosis and more accurate surgeries.

Other types of surgical units mostly used in the operation room include:

  • Patient Monitors- They are used to monitor the overall condition of a patient during surgery
  • Surgical lamp light- Provides lighting during surgical procedures.
  • Infusion pump- Used to infuse liquids or medication into a patients’ system.
  • Pendant- Used to place surgery items or endoscope during a surgical procedure.
  • Anesthesia machine- used to place anesthesia on a patient during a surgical process.
  • Retractors-  Retractors are used to keep the incisions open during surgery
  • Forceps- Forceps are used to hold the skin tissues together firmly.
