Dr. Jejurikar discusses Tummy Tuck procedures in His Plastic Surgery Podcast

Updated on May 6, 2022

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure chosen by most women to accompany a breast lift, augmentation, or reduction as part of a mommy makeover post-pregnancy. According to top plastic surgeon Dr. Jejurikar, the tummy tuck is the most prevalent second component of what he defines as a mommy makeover. In his podcast, Dr. Jejurikar defines a mommy makeover as a breast procedure plus one other procedure to recover a mom’s pre-pregnancy body and shape.

So what exactly is a tummy tuck, and what does the procedure include? We will cover what it is, what happens, whether you are a candidate, and what to expect.

What is a tummy tuck?

Pregnancy can leave behind excess fat, flab, and loose skin in the lower abdomen. This fat and flab are sometimes called a “mother’s apron,” It is resistant to diet and exercise no matter how hard you might try. The tummy tuck procedure can restore the look and shape of your lower abdomen and create a more toned and youthful appearance.

The procedure

Tummy tuck procedures are performed in an outpatient surgical facility or hospital, and it is essential to arrange for a ride home post-procedure and stay with you for at least one night.

A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2-3 hours. Many patients will choose to combine the procedure with liposuction of the upper abdomen, love handles, and thighs.

When performing a tummy tuck, Dr. Jerurikar makes two incisions to separate the skin from the abdominal muscles that have sagged due to pregnancy. The shape and length of the incisions will be determined by the amount of excess skin removed.

The muscles are pulled into place and stitched together. After stretching the skin over the muscles, the excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed. The incision is made in the abdominal skin, and the belly button is re-shaped, creating that youthful look.

Am I a candidate?

Women that are non-smokers and in overall good health are candidates if:

  • They have excess fat or loose skin that is resistant to diet and exercise
  • Are you not planning a subsequent pregnancy
  • Have a protuberant upper or lower abdomen
  • Do not intend to lose a significant amount of weight

What to expect post-procedure

Recovery can take two weeks or up to two months post-procedure. You should be cautious when moving around for the first six weeks and avoid positions that might strain the incision, such as quickly bending the waist, to ensure the wound does not reopen.

Swelling in the surgical area is normal, and pain medication is very likely. Some regular follow-up visits will be scheduled until the healing from the procedure is complete.

A tummy tuck is generally long-lasting if a stable weight is maintained, and the toned and slimmer appearance never fails to delight moms.
