5 Ways To Maintain Good Eyesight As You Age

Updated on August 4, 2021

Your eyesight is one of the most important things that you need to take care of. While there are plenty of prescription glasses available, having poor vision can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, and dangerous, especially when it affects not just the things you read, but also everything you see.

As you age, your body might grow weaker, and you need to do everything you can to support it. With that, you should provide extra care for your eyes, and you should start on it as early as you can. The longer you wait, the more irreversible damages could happen.

Moreover, listed below are the ways to maintain good eyesight as you age.

1. Visit An Eye Doctor

If you think that there’s something wrong with your eyes, it would be beneficial for you to visit a Florida-based eye doctor or one from whichever state that you’re in. It could be because of your blurry vision, painful or teary eyes, or anything about your eyes that concerns you. While you may just want to shrug things off, visiting a professional would be the best option.

Ideally, you should go for the best eye care services in your area. Preferably, you should see an eye doctor near you so you won’t have to go through the trouble of traveling longer, which may affect the condition of your eyes. The faster that you can allow a doctor to check them, the better.

2. Wear Eye Glasses

Too much ultraviolet exposure can damage your eyes and affect your eyesight. With that, you should be wearing sunglasses every time you need to head out and need to go through the sunlight.

While you can always purchase and wear sunglasses with enough tint, it would be helpful if you could buy a pair that blocks at least 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays. This way, you can guarantee complete protection for your eyes, even during broad daylight.

Moreover, if you’re not comfortable wearing sunglasses on top of your eyeglasses or contact lenses, some products offer UV protection as well. This way, you can still have the protection you need, without the additional accessory on your face.

3. Keep A Safe Distance From Your Screen

While it may seem harmless, too much exposure to your computer, TV, and cellphone screens can hurt your eyes, leading to eye strain, blurry vision, dry eyes, headache, trouble focusing a view, and more. With that, it’ll be helpful if you could keep a safe distance from your screen every time you need to use them.

Ideally, you should distance your eyes from your computer screens for at least 20 inches. Along with this, you should also look away from your screen every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. This will help you rest your eyes and keep them healthy as you work.

Moreover, if you need to use your computer daily for long hours, you should consider purchasing computer glasses to protect your eyes from the blue light your screen emits.

4. Avoid Bright Lights

Keeping proper light intensity in your room will help you maintain good eyesight. While it might be more helpful for you to have 100% screen brightness, you might want to consider bringing it down to protect your eyes. Even if you wear a good pair of computer glasses, lowering your screen’s brightness would be helpful.

Bright lights may develop glare and can cause too much strain to your eyes. It might also cause you to feel a slight vibration on your eyes, which may cause panic, especially if it happens too often. Ideally, you should keep the brightness level of your screens and light bulbs at medium opacity to better care for your eyes.

5. Eat The Right Foods

Eating the right foods will help deliver good nutrients to your eyes, allowing you to have good eyesight. This way, you can let yourself have a healthy body and vision, hitting two birds with one stone.

You could begin by filling your meals with foods that are high in vitamin C and E, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, beta-carotene, and lycopene. Adding salmon, green vegetables, citrus fruits, and eggs would be an excellent place to start. You can even play around with these ingredients and be able to create a delicious meal, allowing you to eat them happily.

Ideally, you should diffuse your foods with various nutrients and avoid focusing on a single dish to provide maximum nutrients for your eyesight.

Conclusion

Maintaining good eyesight will benefit you greatly as you age. Nothing feels better than not having any trouble doing everyday activities and allowing your vision to get the job done for you. While it’s not an easy job, you should always look for ways to protect your eyes to keep them healthy all the time.
