5 Routines to Help You Get a Better Night’s Sleep

If you lie awake every night, struggling to get to sleep, it can be endlessly frustrating. However, there are things you can do to help you get a better night’s sleep, and they’re all routines you can easily incorporate into your day. 

You don’t have to put up with substandard sleep, so try to work these ideas into your routine. 

Exercise at the Right Times

Exercise is hugely beneficial for your health, and it can help you sleep better at night. That being said, if you’re exercising just before you intend to go to sleep, then this can make things more complicated. 

Exercise sharpens the mind, gets the blood pumping, and heightens the senses, none of which are conducive to going to sleep. To avoid your exercise having a negative impact on your sleep, it’s beneficial to make sure there’s a good gap of at least a couple of hours between the two. 

Prepare for Sleep 

It’s hard for your brain to go from its normal high-functioning state straight to a sleepy state. It’s a bit like when you wake up in the morning; you take a few minutes before you jump out of bed and start doing anything that requires any serious mental effort. 

If you want to improve your sleep, then you need to give it the same kind of preparation. Give yourself an hour before bed, where you get into a routine of doing things that help you get to sleep. Gradually work your way into that mental state where you can go to sleep. 

Take a Warm Shower

A warm shower is a great way to induce that sleepy feeling. So, run a nice hot shower, get out your organic goat soap, and simply relax. Wash the stresses away and prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep. 

The changes in your body temperature send a signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep, and this can mean you spend a lot less time counting sheep.

Remove Distractions 

You know how it is, you’re just about to nod off, and suddenly you hear your phone buzz. As much as you want to ignore it, you also want to know what it says, so you give it a quick check. 

This is really bad for getting to sleep and can mean you have to start the whole process again. One of the ways you can overcome this is by turning your electronic devices off or not having them in the bedroom. 

Try to get rid of all the things that can distract you in your bedroom and focus on giving yourself a good night’s sleep. 

Get Black Out Curtains

If you’re someone who struggles to sleep unless there’s total darkness, then invest in some blackout curtains. 

Our bodies are programmed to sleep when it’s dark and be awake when it’s light, so it’s natural that a bright room makes it hard to sleep. However, in modern society, some areas just don’t get dark because of street lamps and other light pollution, and this can make it much more difficult to sleep.
