Ninety-two nursing schools nationwide, including Robert Morris University, now offer a doctor of nursing practice degree. Another 102 are considering adding a DNP program.
In light of such rapid growth for this relatively new degree program, RMU is hosting a panel discussion for the local health care industry titled, “DNPs: Who Are They? How Can They Add Value?” on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Sewall Center at RMU’s Moon Township campus.
John Luellen, medical director of satellite services for Heritage Valley Health System will serve as the moderator. The six panelists will discuss how DNPs can contribute to and improve health care organizations. The panelists are:
- Judith Kaufmann, the director of the DNP Program at RMU
- Mary Goessler, medical director at Highmark Inc.,
- Stephan Foreman, associate professor of health care administration at RMU,
- Jennifer Haser Keeley, pulmonary hypertension nurse practitioner at UPMC
- Hunter Champion, director of the pulmonary vascular disease center at UPMC
- Holly Hampe, vice president/chief quality officer at St. Clair Hospital
The DNP program at Robert Morris, established in 2007, was the first to be certified by state Board of Nursing in Pennsylvania. Advanced practice nurses with a DNP degree use theory, clinical inquiry, information technology, and evidence-based practice for aid in delivering quality care. DNP degrees are offered in adult psychiatric mental health, adult nurse practitioner, and family nurse practitioner.
