Allegheny General Hospital’s Amy Stine Workshop Focuses on Integrative Psychiatry and a Holistic Approach to Children’s Mental Health

Health practitioners and the public are invited to explore ways that environmental factors such as nutrition, exercise and family dynamics can impact the mental health of children during an interactive workshop on Saturday, May 5 at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH).

The third annual Amy Stine Workshop on Holisitic Medicine will feature a keynote address by Scott Shannon, MD, a pediatric/adolescent psychiatrist and author of Please Do Not Label My Child, a guide to holistic child psychiatry for parents.

“There is a tremendous interest in how children can benefit from holistic care,” said event organizer Betsy O’Neill, MD, Medical Director of the Integrated Medicine Program at AGH. “Parents of children with autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders and depression, eating disorders, ADHD, and other conditions may benefit from Dr. Shannon’s presentation and expertise.”

Dr. Shannon practices as a holistic child psychiatrist in Fort Collins, Colorado and at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver at the new Integrative Child Psychiatry Clinic. He is a founding member and past president of the American Holistic Medical Association and serves on the American Board of Holistic Medicine.

Other presentations at the workshop will focus on the current state of complementary medicine in the United States, including grief and health, doctor-patient communication, and family constellation therapy.

The event is sponsored by AGH’s Integrated Medicine Program and Department of Psychiatry and the family of Dr. Amy Ruth Stine. Dr. Stine was a much beloved holistic family physician in the Pittsburgh area with a private practice addressing body, mind and spirit. This workshop is offered in her memory and provides healing concepts for both the medical professional and the public.

The cost is $30 for the public and practitioners receiving continuing education credits and $20 for students with valid ID. Breakfast and lunch are included. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and Dr. Shannon’s talk is scheduled for 11 a.m.
