Mount Nittany Health names Dr. Joshi as new System Chief Medical Officer 

Nirmal JoshiMount Nittany Health is pleased to announce that Nirmal Joshi, MD, FACP, has been selected as System Chief Medical Officer for the organization. With nearly 30 years of healthcare experience, Dr. Joshi joins Mount Nittany Health with an impressive physician/executive background including clinical leadership of a large healthcare system, medical staff leadership, and leadership experience in quality measures.

Dr. Joshi earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree and his medical degree in internal medicine from King George’s Hospital Center in Lucknow, India. He completed his internal medicine residency at Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, MD, and his infectious disease fellowship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, staying on as faculty with The Pennsylvania State University for the next eight years.

Dr. Joshi previously held administrative and academic positions with Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In his academic role, he developed various new training and testing methods for medical students at Penn State. As a medical educator, he has led Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs. Recruited by Harvard Medical International (HMI), Dr. Joshi served as Medical Director and Chief Operating Officer, providing founding leadership for a large, integrated for-profit health system in Delhi, India, and helped to create two ambulatory centers of a large hospital system – with more than 400 beds – in the capital city. He was employed for 14 years with Pinnacle Health System, where he lead the internal medicine residency program and held various leadership roles in education, research and clinical informatics, most recently serving as Sr. Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer.
Dr. Joshi is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a member of the American Medical Association. He has served on the Board of Asian Indian Americans of Central PA, a large non-profit community service organization; Hindu American Religious Institute (HARI); the Harrisburg Academy, an independent school system; and continues to serve on he Board of Wilson College, a liberal arts college in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was named as a 2016 recipient of Becker’s Hospital Review “Top 100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Watch.”
Outside of the office, he regularly blogs and writes columns in local and national news publications and has published a non-fiction book entitled Five drops of Estrogen, describing the strong influence of five women in his life. He has published extensively both in medical journals as well as in the lay press including a popular op-ed piece in the New York Times, outlining groundbreaking innovative work in patient satisfaction and doctor-patient communication. Dr. Joshi has written and produced two full-length amateur digital films and looks forward to combining this hobby with his love of hiking, hoping to explore Mount Nittany in the near future.

Dr. Joshi and his wife, Renu, a practicing endocrinologist, have two grown children, Disha and Rajat. Disha is completing a doctoral degree in Psychology and an MBA at Widener University and Rajat is a medical student at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
