LASIK: The Future of Eye Care

Updated on May 23, 2021

Our eyes have always served as one of the first parts of the body that we are aware of as we were growing up. We use it to see things and make assumptions of the world around us. We follow the colors and lights that the surroundings might bring us and it gives us lessons as we grow older. Not all people were given this gift, and we need to be thankful that our eyes are working normally. We can still make sense of the world from a visual perspective and it makes our life way easier than we think. As the old adage says, our eyes are the windows to the soul. Not just because observing another person’s eye can give us a glimpse of their personality, but it also opens our own.

However, the eyes are also one of the most sensitive parts of the body. It is the most vulnerable part of the body since it is not covered by the skin nor supported by bones. The hairs around the eyes serves as a filter for bacteria and dirt but can still be compromised. Our eyelids also serve as protection as it open and close on periodic times. Our tear glands also release secretions to help lubricate the eyes in case of any intruders. However, there are certain damages which cannot be easily prevented.

There are so many people in this world who are experiencing cases of myopia and hyperopia, also known as nearsightedness and farsightedness respectively. To put it simply, people who suffer with these complications cannot see far or near objects. This is due to some of the nerves inside the eye being damaged, thus making it harder (or easier) for the light to pass through the pupil of the eye. These people usually have higher than 20/20 vision and uses prescription glasses or contacts. Know about the history of prescription glasses by clicking here.

Another type of eye complication which needs these apparatuses is astigmatism. This is the condition wherein the light enters the eye in various ways through the retina. Thus, this creates a lopsided or distorted image inside the brain. Some people report that the supposed straight lines of an object are not straight anymore. They also suffer from headaches, blurred vision and poor night vision. Since its first reported case in 1801, many optometrists have also created devices specific for this condition.

As much as the community is thankful for the invention of prescription glasses and contacts, they can also be really difficult to maintain. You cannot also wear either of them for a very long time. Glasses can also be very fragile and many people who wore them were not even allowed to join sports before. Contacts made it a bit better, but they can also be very uncomfortable to wear. They can also be easily lost and damaged because of its fragility. You also need to clean it every time since it is worn directly on the eye. Any kind of dirt can affect the vision that it gives to the bearer.

Thankfully, science and technology has given us another solution.

LASIK, or laser vision correction, is a noninvasive procedure which repairs the damaged nerves of the eyes. It uses needle-sized lasers which goes through the eyes and corrects the affected nerves. It is considered as a long lasting version of the corrective glasses or contacts since it can be a permanent cure. It is also the most common procedure for eye treatment in the US today. For example, there are a lot of LASIK surgery clinics Portland has to offer. Some of them even have websites that you can visit. Just make sure that they are legitimate eye clinics so you can be assured of your health and safety.

Prescription glasses and contacts have served a lot of people for many years, thinking that those are the only options for them. With this laser eye surgery technology, people are starting to live without these contraptions anymore. They can now do many things that they never could before without risking any damage on these things. As it is considered a long lasting solution, you also do not need to update it every year. You do not need to worry about those anymore.
