How to stay healthy and warm during camping?

Updated on September 10, 2020

In spring and autumn, it can cool down quite a bit in the evening, and the temperature in the tent drop accordingly. Not to mention the winter, of course. However, this does not have to be a reason to refrain from camping. With the right heating and a few additional tricks here, it stays nice and warm in the tent, even at low outside temperatures. Would you like to know how? Then read on quickly.

Tip 1: Get a suitable heater

It is evident, of course, heating is needed. But which? Not so easy to decide which heater is the right one for which tent. You have to do some research to choose a suitable tent heater for you.

Security tips

There are a few things to consider when using a heater in the tent:

  • Never place the heater directly against the back of the tent wall. The heaters radiate their heat forward and upward. If the heater is at the back against the tent wall, the heat that rises comes too close to the tent slope and can scorch the canvas.
  • Your tent must always be sufficiently ventilated. This is the only way to keep the heating burning, and no carbon monoxide can be generated.
  • Also, leave a space of at least 1 meter on the heater’s front so that the heat can flow out well.
  • Be careful with small children and pets. Gas heaters, in particular can get very warm.

Tip 2: An inner tent

If possible, use an inner tent. Such can be a few degrees. The heat, including body heat, stays longer in an inner tent. In addition, no condensation forms in an inner tent, which quickly ensures a clammy and uncomfortably cold climate.

Tip 3: Insulate the floor

Above all, the cold comes from below. So it is essential to insulate the floor well so that the cold does not have a chance to enter the tent. As with clothing, the onion model is also suitable here. That means several layers on top of each other help better than a thick layer. Start with a tarpaulin/tarpaulin and place a tent carpet over it. The tarpaulin keeps the cold and moisture out of the ground; the tent carpet provides warmth and softness for your feet.

Tip 4: No wet or cold things in the tent

Leave wet clothes, towels, but also cold things such as ski equipment or sleds outside. If you keep them in the tent, it quickly becomes clammy and cold inside.

Tip 5: Keep yourself warm

Your body temperature affects the temperature in the tent. So always make sure that you are warm yourself, especially at night. To do this, you need the following things:

  • A sleeping bag that is suitable for low temperatures. Therefore, pay attention to an appropriate comfort area.
  • A sleeping mat/sleeping mat with a high R-value. The higher the R-value, the better the mat insulates against cold from below.
  • Don’t put too many clothes on in the sleeping bag. Functional underwear is best worn to make optimum use of the sleeping bag’s thermal performance.
