How to Cope with the Difficult Emotions of Trying to Conceive

Updated on August 22, 2021

When getting pregnant doesn’t happen as quickly as you’d hoped, it can easily start to weigh on you emotionally. You become anxious, stressed out, and overwhelmed by the process. Trying to conceive can also put a strain on your relationship causing a multitude of problems that further deter you from your goals. For some individuals, it gets so bad that they fall into a state of depression which, then impacts every aspect of their lives.

There are a number of factors that can have a negative effect on a person’s fertility. That also means a plethora of treatment options, which, depending on the severity of the underlying cause, could take a while to work. Unfortunately, for some couples, there is no treatment available which is another emotional overwhelm.

While it’s unfortunate that not all circumstances can be changed when and how you want, failing to deal with the negative emotions only adds to the complications and further impacts your life. The best thing you can do for yourself and your partner is learning how to cope with these overwhelming emotions in a healthy manner. Below are some suggestions on how to get through such a trying time.

Visit a Doctor or Fertility Specialist

Not getting pregnant as quickly as you’d like can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s very common to begin assuming the worse (that there’s something terribly wrong or that you’ll never have children). Rather than trying to self-diagnose or jump to conclusions, get actual data and a proper diagnosis from your doctor or trained fertility specialists like Cryos International. In many cases, you may find that your fertility issue is completely treatable. At the very least, they can go over other options with you like Invitro Fertilization (IVF), sperm donors, surrogacy options, or adoption.

Let It Out

Trying to hold in your emotions is one of the worst things you can do. Eventually, it festers causing both physical and mental harm. It’s okay if your journey has not been as easy as you’d like. There’s also nothing wrong with being upset or sad. Find constructive ways to release those emotions. Cry, scream into a pillow, break some dishes, write it down in a journal, or vent to a loved one.

Take Care of Your Health

Your physical and mental wellbeing are tied to one another. If you’re not taking care of yourself, essential your health is compromised which also makes it harder to conceive a child (or have a healthy pregnancy). No matter how you’re feeling it is important to prioritize your health. Make sure you’re eating well-balanced meals at least three times a day, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, stay active through exercise or other physical activities, and get enough sleep each night.

Do Things You Enjoy

When you’re trying to get pregnant, but can’t it can put a real damper on things. You start isolating yourself from people and things you once enjoyed. Too much isolation, however, can lead to depression. It is important that you continue to lead a happy life beyond your pregnancy struggles. Reconnect with friends and family members and spend time together, attend social gatherings and events, travel, shop, paint, or do whatever puts a smile on your face. You’d be surprised how many people end up conceiving simply by taking a step back and enjoying life as it is now.

Learn Your Triggers

There’s no doubt that trying to get pregnant is emotional. To try and ease the pain, start paying attention to what triggers you to feel down. If taking pregnancy tests every month gets you sad, perhaps you shouldn’t take them anymore and just wait at least 30 days after your first missed period before visiting the doctor. If talking about babies makes you sad, then try to find other topics to discuss. If tracking your ovulation and scheduling appointments for intercourse is causing anxiety and friction in the marriage, then maybe you should just go back to letting things happen by chance for a while.

The desire to have children brings about a lot of emotions for both women and men. When their plans don’t go as they thought, however, these emotions heighten and cause a multitude of physical and emotional problems. These emotions, in turn, can take over your life and make it difficult to get pregnant. To prevent this from happening to you, it is imperative to use steps like those above to deal with your overwhelming emotions.
