Health Department Names Dr. Roderick L. Harris as Deputy Director

Screen Shot 2014-03-07 at 9.33.51 AMThe Allegheny County Health Department today announced the appointment of Roderick L. Harris, DrPH, as Deputy Director of Community Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Dr. Harris will supervise the Bureau of Community Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, which includes the following programs: Chronic Disease/Injury Prevention, Dental, Infectious Disease, Maternal and Child Health, Pharmacy, Sexually Transmitted Disease and HIV/AIDS, and the Women, Infants and Children supplemental food and nutrition program. The appointment is effective March 17.

“With a strong background in community health, particularly in the areas of health equity and children’s and family health, Dr. Harris will play a critically important role in leading the Health Department’s efforts to achieve our vision of healthy people in healthy communities,” said Health Director Dr. Karen Hacker.

Dr. Harris comes to Allegheny County from the Sedgwick County Health Department in Wichita, Kansas, where he served as Director of the Children & Family Health Division and Director of the Center for Health Equity. He previously worked for the Cuyahoga County Board of Health in Cleveland, the Cincinnati Health Department and in various health, safety and environmental positions at Eastman Kodak.

Dr. Harris has a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Behavioral and Community Health Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh; Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) in Health Services Administration from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee; and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Science from Ohio University.
