Cedarville Launches Reading Endorsement

Updated on August 8, 2013

Starting this fall, Cedarville University will offer a graduate-level reading endorsement. The 16-hour program adds an endorsement to an existing Ohio teaching license and qualifies teachers to provide focused reading instruction for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The program, which can be completed in one year, consists of four online classes and three field experiences in early childhood, middle and high school education.

According to Margaret Grigorenko, associate professor of education, the reading endorsement is designed to accommodate busy professionals. “The online platform and flexible field experience options allow teachers to tailor them to fit their schedules and locations,” Grigorenko said. “The field experiences can be completed within schools or in unique situations like reading tutoring, church literacy programs and even homeless shelters.”

Grigorenko said the program is also financially competitive, with tuition of $398 per credit hour for the 2013-2014 school year.

In addition to adding the reading endorsement to existing licenses, the program course work can also be used to meet requirements for teacher license renewal. Teachers without an Ohio license can still enroll in the courses to satisfy electives for Cedarville’s Master of Education program, although the course work will not qualify for an endorsement.
