Breast Reduction Surgery Basics

Updated on August 26, 2020

A lot of men and women nowadays perceive that having bigger and fuller breasts is a standard of beauty. Because of this, ladies with larger breasts are deemed lucky as they no longer need to undergo plastic surgery in order to alter the way their bodies look for an upsize. They do not have to exert much effort in creating cleavage and rocking body-hugging OOTDs.  The truth is beauty standards actually differ from person to person and are always based on the perception of the viewer.

Some women who have massive breasts may not consider themselves lucky. Especially if their breasts become a nuisance to their health and the way they live their lives. Beyond its pleasing appearance, as some would suppose, breasts that are extraordinarily bigger and heavier than the norm can pose health risks. As a woman grows older, the way the breasts look like also changes drastically. The once young and firm breasts become loose and saggy. Smaller breasts may not find any issues with this, but imagine the dilemma this can create for those with an immense set of boobs.

Thankfully, cosmetic surgery does not only offer procedures that can alter breasts to look bigger. For women who are looking into reconstructing their large breasts to a more manageable weight and size, you can do so with breast reduction surgery.

Definition of Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is a type of operation that is performed to remove excess amounts of fat, skin, and tissue from the breast and recreate it to be better suited to the body or however a patient may wish for it to look like. A doctor can improve the breasts’ aesthetics by improving their appearance, size, weight, and feel.

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

According to Foxeny.com, women who choose to undergo breast reduction surgery do it for health and cosmetic reasons. As previously mentioned larger breasts carry on additional weight and can negatively impact the body’s physical health as well as posture. The body can benefit physically from breast reduction surgery by:

  • Easing pain that can affect the back, neck, and shoulders
  • Improving a patient’s ability and comfort to do exercise or other physical activities

Cosmetic benefits of breast reduction are:

  • A more youthful appearance of the breasts as the end result eliminates sagging
  • Bras and fitted clothing will look better when worn
  • The breasts will look more proportion to the body
  • Overall improved self-confidence and outlook in life

Types of Breast Reduction

There are various types of breast reduction methods available. The technique to be used will depend on the following factors:

  • Your expected results
  • Your breasts’ natural structure
  • The amount of tissue needed to be removed

The option which your doctor may recommend is one of these:

  • Anchor Breast Reduction

Best candidates: Women with asymmetrical breasts and a huge quantity of saggy and stretched skin that needs to be removed

Anchor breast reduction, or Inverted-T, is best done on patients whose procedure requires the removal and reconstruction of a massive amount of tissue and skin from the breasts. It is done by creating incisions on three (3) parts of the breast: a cut along the crease located beneath the breast, a vertical cut from the breast crease going to the areola, and a round cut tracing the edge of the areola.

  • Lollipop Breast Reduction

Best candidates: Women with moderate breast sag, as well as a fair amount of skin and tissue that needs to be removed

Lollipop or vertical breast reduction is performed by making incisions, first, on the circumference of the areola and, second, a vertical cut located at the base of the areola going to the crease underneath the breast.

  • Liposuction

Best for: Women who wants minimal to moderate change in the size and weight of their breasts, are with good skin flexibility and minor breast sag attributed to unwanted fats

Unlike the two previous methods, liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that involves no major incisions. This technique for breast reduction is also completed quickly compared to surgery. Liposuction is generally done using a machine that suctions out fatty tissues from the body.

Breast Reduction Results

When successfully carried out by an expert cosmetic surgeon, the results of breast reduction are definitely rewarding. However, results do not appear right after surgery. Expect your breasts to look swollen and the operated areas to feel sore. As your body heals over time, you will begin to observe your breasts to grow smaller and adapt to its new form. Complete healing of your breasts should occur 3 months after the surgery, but some changes may continue to happen up until a year after your surgery. Results can last a lifetime, although sagging may occur as the body’s aging is inevitable. This, however, will not be as extreme as you once had, prior to the breast reduction procedure.
