Allegheny Health Network’s Thierry Verstraeten, MD, Named President of Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society

Thierry Verstraeten, MD, an ophthalmologist with Allegheny Health Network, is the new president of the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society. His peers elected him to a two-year term that runs to 2017.

Dr. Verstraeten is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists. He practices at Allegheny Ophthalmic & Orbital Associates, P.C., based at Allegheny General Hospital.

“This is a tremendous honor because it is a selection made by my fellow ophthalmologists in the Pittsburgh area,” Dr. Verstraeten said. “The Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society is dedicated to promoting the importance of preventive eye care as well as quality medical and surgical care and rehabilitative services for people with ophthalmologic diseases. Additionally, I look forward to leading the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society as we work to continually advance the practice of ophthalmology.”

After attending college and medical school in his native Belgium, Dr. Verstraeten completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in vitreo-retinal disease and surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich.

A noted international lecturer and past recipient of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology’s Travel Fellowship, Dr. Verstraeten has co-authored numerous publications and book chapters about the treatment of retinal diseases. He specializes in macular disease and surgery with an emphasis on macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss that impacts more than 10 million Americans – more than cataracts and glaucoma combined.

Garry Condon, MD, chairman of the ophthalmology department at Allegheny General Hospital and a colleague of Dr. Verstraeten’s at Allegheny Ophthalmic & Orbital Associates, lauded the election of his partner to oversee the Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society.

“He has long been regarded as a national opinion leader in retinal disease and has lectured extensively in Europe as well,” Dr. Condon said. “The Society is fortunate that it will now get to benefit on the local level from Dr. Verstraeten’s leadership and expertise.”
