5 Health Benefits of CBD

Updated on March 9, 2020

If it seems like you’re seeing CBD products everywhere, that’s because you are. Since cannabis was legalized for medical and recreational use, CBD products have exploded in availability and popularity over the last year. Whether it’s Los Angeles, San Diego, or a Palm Springs dispensary, you’re bound to find shelves stacked with CBD products. There is also a growing awareness of the health benefits of CBD oil, contributing to consumerism. We’ve compiled a list of the top five health benefits and use of CBD.

1. Arthritis Pain

Arthritis impacts people of all ages, sexes, and races, causing swelling, pain, and stiffness in one’s joints. According to the Centers for Disease and Control, over 54 million people in the United States have arthritis. There are many ways to reduce arthritis pain, one now being CBD.

In one research study, scientists examined the efficacy of CBD in reducing inflammation and pain caused by arthritis. For four consecutive days, these researchers applied a gel containing CBD to rats diagnosed with arthritis. Once the research was concluded, it was found that the application of CBD had therapeutic effects on relieving arthritis pain and inflammation, with no adverse side effects. People with arthritis are also finding relief through the use of transdermal CBD. However, there is still room for more human studies to confirm these findings.

2. Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that disrupts the communication between the brain and body. One of the most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis is painful spasms. One report found that the use of oral cannabinoids successfully reduced spasticity symptoms in people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Therefore, a number of people are now opting for CBD to ease the symptoms.

3. Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health illnesses in the United States, affecting over 40 million adults alone. This mental illness is associated with feelings of worry, unease, and nervousness. To treat anxiety, most health care professionals will prescribe anxiolytics. Unfortunately, these medications come with adverse side effects, including agitation, insomnia, drowsiness, etc. Fortunately, CBD has shown great promise in treating symptoms associated with anxiety. In one study, researchers provided participants with oral CBD and had them undergo a simulated public speaking test. Once the experiment was concluded, it was found that a 300-mg dosage of CBD was effective in reducing anxiety during the simulation.

4. Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disrupted, resulting in seizures. Usually, doctors will prescribe antiepileptic drugs to prevent seizures. Recently, the United States Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of CBD for the treatment of seizures of two rare forms of epilepsy. This includes Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome. The types of seizures that characterize both these forms of epilepsy are difficult to control with other types of medication.

5. Acne

CBD oil has shown to improve various types of acne through its ability to reduce sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that our body naturally produces to hydrate the skin. However, the overproduction of sebum is one of the main causes of acne. Many over the counter acne products contain chemicals that are hard on the skin. Therefore, many people are now opting for CBD oil to reduce acne.
