WHAT: Patients and their loved ones are invited to learn about celiac diagnosis and disease management in the new Celiac Disease Center, part of the UPMC Digestive Disorders Center. Special lectures will address disease manifestations of the skin as well as nutrition pointers.
WHY: Approximately 3 million people in the U.S. have celiac disease, a condition that creates inflammation and damages the lining of the small intestine. This prevents absorbing components of food that are important for staying healthy. The damage is due to a reaction to eating gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye and possibly oats.
