Cedarville University’s counseling center welcomed a new leader to its department when Mindy May accepted the position of director of counseling. She started at Cedarville on January 6, 2014.
“Mindy is a great fit with our counseling program and with Cedarville University,” said Jon Wood, vice president of student life and Christian ministries. “She brings a high level of compassion for people that I believe will help our students who may struggle with modern-day issues. Mindy will strengthen an already strong counseling team.”
May has professional experience and education in the counseling field. Since 2006, she worked for the Walsh Counseling Center in Fort Worth, Texas, helping children who struggled with anger management, abusive situations, and depression. From 2008 until joining Cedarville University, she counseled in Fort Worth-area churches, at Walsh, and at the Metroplex Counseling Center in Bedford, Texas.
In addition to providing counseling services, May also has been a graduate level instructor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Dallas Baptist University.
“I am excited to be at Cedarville University and have the opportunity to walk along side our students who may be struggling with a particular issue,” said May on her second day at work. “This is my passion. I love combining professional counseling with a biblical world view, and I really look forward to meeting and helping students.”
May has received many counseling awards during her educational pursuits and professional work. Most recently, she was the recipient of a prestigious scholarship from the American Association of Christian Counselors. She’s also presented at numerous counseling conferences, including the American Association of Christian Counselors in 2011 and 2012.
“Mindy possesses rare intellectual abilities, a love for helping others, and an outgoing personality,” said Thomas White, president. “Her ground breaking research and Christ-centered counseling will be a great addition to the Cedarville Family.”
A graduate of East Texas Baptist University (B.A. in psychology), May also holds a master of arts (M.A.) in Christian ministries and in marriage and an M.A. degree in family counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. She anticipates earning her Ph.D. in May. Her dissertation is “A qualitative study of the trauma needs among adolescent victims of domestic sex trafficking.” May is also nearing completion of state licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
