On Thursday, September 10, hosts Clifford & Diane Rowe and Mario & Nathalie Lemieux celebrated a successful expansion project and opening of two new units at the Pediatric Specialty Hospital of The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center. The evening also launched The Children’s Home’s “We’re Growing Up” Capital Campaign.

The demand for the services of the Pediatric Specialty Hospital has grown steadily over the last several years, most recently operating at 80% capacity or higher. In order to meet the needs of the community and the patient population, the Pediatric Specialty Hospital added two new clinical units. This addition, designed with the input of previous patients and medical staff, features 14 large private patient rooms with dedicated family space in each room; this unique design allows families to comfortably stay overnight in the patient rooms, thereby easing stress and enabling round-the-clock caregiving practice for their child’s medical needs. The new units also feature a family lounge, created by the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

“The Children’s Home is committed to meeting the needs of our community,” said Pam Schanwald, CEO of The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center. “This expansion allows The Children’s Home to increase its ability to serve a greater number of children and families with specialized pediatric medical care.”

With $7 Million already raised for this necessary expansion, The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center is looking to the community for their support, to raise the remaining $1.5 Million to ensure that the two new units of the Pediatric Specialty Hospital can be fully staffed and equipped. The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center is growing up to fulfill its mission to promote the health and well-being of infants and children, while strengthening families.
