Barbara A. Clouser, MD, Named Medical Director of West Penn Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Neonatologist Barbara A. Clouser, MD, has joined Allegheny Health Network (AHN) as Medical Director of the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at West Penn Hospital.

Dr. Clouser comes to AHN from Akron Children’s Hospital – Mahoning Valley, where she was director of the NICU. She began her career as a neonatologist at the then-Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, and was director of the NICU at Allegheny General Hospital before it merged with West Penn’s NICU in 2008.

“We are very happy to have Dr. Clouser return to AHN to lead West Penn’s NICU,” said Joseph Aracri, DO, System Chair of Pediatrics, Allegheny Health Network. “Her depth of experience will serve the NICU well as it embarks on the first major expansion and renovation project in its long and distinguished history.”

Dr. Clouser is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She served a pediatric internship and residency at the University of California at San Diego and a neonatology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Magee Women’s Hospital.

AHN offers two Level III NICUs – indicating the highest level of specialized care available – at West Penn and at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie.  West Penn is a major regional referral center for infants who require neonatal care. Every year, the neonatal transport team transfers about 250 infants to West Penn from community hospitals in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.

Highly skilled nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, neonatal respiratory therapists, and a physician staff of board-certified neonatologists provide in-house care for sick newborns 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

A Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program consisting of an infant developmental specialist, a neonatologist, and a physical therapist assesses the development of NICU graduates and offers support to their families for up to two years.

In 2016, AHN will begin a major expansion and renovation of the West Penn NICU, including private rooms for most families.

In addition, two AHN hospitals – Forbes Hospital and Jefferson Hospital – offer Level II nurseries, designed for infants with medical needs who are not critically ill.

Allegheny Health Network is a regional and national leader in advanced obstetric and gynecologic care. West Penn Hospital, Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills and Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie provide inpatient obstetric care, as well as neonatal intensive care for premature infants. According to Comparion® Medical Analytics, 2016 National Quality Rating Database, Allegheny Health Network Women’s Care is ranked #1 in Western Pennsylvania, and in the top 6% nationally for quality women’s health care.
