Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program, part of Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, announces the 21st Annual Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Symposium, “Weaving Prayer and Presence in Health Ministry.” The symposium will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Sister M. Ferdinand Clark Auditorium, Level 2 at UPMC Mercy, 1400 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219 (Uptown).
Held annually since 1992, the symposium provides continuing education, resources, and networking opportunities to individuals who have or are interested in starting health ministries in their faith communities. Parish and faith community nurses; clergy; health, pastoral, and social ministers; health and social service professionals; nursing students; and laypersons who are interested in wholistic (whole person) health care are encouraged to attend.
Faith Roberts, RN, MSN, FCN, director of the Magnet/Professional Practice Program, Parish Nursing, and Obstetrical Services at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, will deliver the keynote address, “Weaving Prayer and Presence Together…Be Still and Know that I am God.” Ms. Roberts will also present “Beyond Blood Pressures…” and will lead an interactive discussion titled “Ready, Set…Wait a Minute…Where Are We Going? Health Care Reform and Health Ministry.”
Ms. Roberts has delivered more than 2,800 presentations to local, regional, national, and international audiences and has presented numerous times on spirituality, prayer, and presence at the Westberg Symposium and the Health Ministries Association Conference. Additionally, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) and the Mayo Clinic each have highlighted Ms. Roberts’ presentation on “Spiritual Distress.”
Drawing on her vast knowledge and extensive experience in administration, education, and clinical practice, Ms. Roberts blends theory and clinical practice with a healthy dose of reality. She captivates audiences with her gift of storytelling. Participants will leave laughing and with many new ideas for health ministry.
Three continuing education credits will be offered to registered nurses*, social service professionals†, and licensed professional counselors† who attend.
The cost is $40 for registered nurses, social workers, and licensed professional counselors who wish to receive continuing education credits; $30 for those who do not wish to receive continuing education credits; $20 for individuals who have never attended the annual Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program symposium; and $10 for ordained pastors/clergy and undergraduate nursing students.
The cost includes brunch and free parking in the Locust Street Parking Garage, located at Locust and Stevenson Streets.
